A guide to visiting the land down under of the land down under

Tassie here we come!

If you are from Australia, you are likely familiar enough with air travel. Australia hovers around in the group of countries with most flights per capita, mostly on account of the significant distances between the major population areas. This means that Australia has a well developed, safe, well-regulated and effective domestic air system. Whoever you fly with internally to the country is generally safe and efficient where paying more is generally for a more ‘premium’ service. The main four carriers are Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Regional Express.

Flying into Australia, we recommend flying into Melbourne directly if possible. If you are going to AstroEdu, then .. welcome! You are in Melbourne! But also Melbourne is the closest international airport – just over an hour away –  to Hobart, where RTSRE is held. If you are going directly to Hobart, most international carriers will allow you to book all the way to Hobart. It is possible depending on where you are coming from that you may have to route through Sydney (which is the largest international airport), Perth (which is the first major city… and the only city for about 2600kms if you are coming from the West) or Brisbane (another international airport, although a bit distant from Melbourne or Hobart).

Hobart is smaller city of around a quarter of a million, but still offers the same range from budget to luxury. Most of the appropriate accommodation options (including the venue itself) will be towards the north end of the waterfront although anywhere within the CBD or waterfront would be fine. Don’t let your map application fool you though. While Melbourne’s streets are mostly flat… sometimes with a steady gradual incline, Hobart can be quite hilly in spots. Down near the waterfront – both the north and south sides and in the central CBD is largely fine but if you go further afield, it pays to check with street view whether or not you’ve plonked yourself at the top of a hill!

Henry Jones Art Hotel

Our venue this time around is the Henry Jones Art Hotel, directly on the Hobart Waterfront. It offers an fusion of Australian history, Tasmanian art, deluxe accommodation and fine dining within its storied walls. It is located in the Hunter Street Precinct on the waterfront and nearby the Hobart Docks and Salamanca Place, all of which ooze local, national and global history. The bobbing cray boats in the bustling Hobart Docks surround the area. Here, the maritime spirit of Hobart is alive and thriving, a spectacle beloved by both locals and visitors, to explore more of the local area, see here.
