Jim Buchholz – Workshop

  13:45-15:15

This interactive workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of radio astronomy through both scientific analysis and creative visualization. Participants will first create a colored optical mosaic of the Moon, providing a visual reference before transitioning into the radio domain. Attendees will learn how to map a celestial radio source using the Skynet Robotic Telescope Network. They will then focus on interpreting preliminary radio data products, followed by hands-on data processing to generate a coherent radio image—transforming invisible radio signals into visible representations.

We will then introduce calibration techniques: measuring the brightness of a target source and comparing it to a reference of known flux, a transferable skill useful in both radio and optical astronomy. Finally, participants will analyze the origin of the Moon’s radio emissions—determining whether the observed signals result from reflected sunlight or intrinsic blackbody (thermal) emission.
