Probably one of the great advantages of optical astronomy… not to knock our baby cousin, radio astronomy …. Is the great aesthetics and immediate reaction that a beautiful nebula, galaxy or planet can elicit from a student. It is one of the tools that draws students into the topic at hand and may even form a gateway into science for some. It is likely the most successful high school level approach in astronomy education thus far, particularly when paired with access to free robotic telescopes for students to get their own colour pictures. There are a few ways to tackle colour imagining and bring it into the classroom. It can be as short as a single lesson or two… more commonly over the course of a week or two… or can be extended and stretched beyond the usually 2-3 week Earth & Space Science slot to a topic in and of itself and also outside the science classroom delving into the arts classroom. We provide a few simple approaches to colour imaging that can get you started on this journey as well as provide space to others in the room to share their experiences, tools and curriculum that they use in other contexts.
