About the conference

A conference to provide a global picture of the role scientific research, technical engineering and astronomy education play in student research and education.

The RTSRE conference series focuses on building a sustainable community around the educational, technical and student research uses of robotic telescopes, from small through to large aperture and from radio through to gamma-ray and involving both observed and archival data. It aims to be a meeting place for astronomers, teachers, educators, outreach practitioners, researchers, and observatory and telescope network developers and managers, in a continuing effort to share and combine resources, develop and enhance education and research programs, and foster global conversations and collaborations. It facilitates the storage of knowledge in the field through it’s yearly dual-peer-reviewed proceedings journal, RTSRE Proceedings and an astronomical journal, Astronomy, Theory, Observations and Methods.

THE PROGRAM

Below is a brief outline of the various programs associated with RTSRE 2019

Art, Visualisation and the Cosmos in Education

The combination of perspectives from Science and Art are increasingly acknowledged as powerful approaches to both fields, and to education and public outreach. These interdisciplinary innovations reflect new understandings of the role of visualisation in science knowledge building and learning. This symposium aims to bring together a heterogenous group of researchers, scientists, teachers, artists and educators from around the world to discuss ideas and practical applications of combining Art and Science through Representation and modeling, Visualisation, Big Data, and VR/AR, both in the traditional classrooms and informal learning settings such as Planetariums.

The content theme throughout the symposium is loosely based around astronomy, but related topics in earth and space sciences as well as contemporary physics are very welcome. We also welcome participants interested in the broader overarching ideas, theories and practical applications of these interdisciplinary innovations, without a particular content area focus. A peer reviewed conference proceedings volume will result as part of this meeting

Connecting the Public to the Night Sky Workshop

Mt Burnett Observatory, Dandenong Ranges, Victoria, Australia

On the 7th of December 2019, Mt Burnett Observatory, an astronomy association in the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne, will host a one-day workshop at Emerald Secondary College. The day will be a series of practical workshops, keynotes, talks and group discussions aiming to share knowledge, experiences and methods to connect informal/public and out-of-school communities

RTSRE Welcome Reception

The welcome reception for the RTSRE Conference will run from 17:00 – 23:00 at Beer DeLuxe.

Beer DeLuxe is the best kept secret in Federation Square. Come and enjoy food and brews from the around the world.

RTSRE Main Event

Education and Student Research With Telescopes Teacher Workshop

Eltham College, Eltham

Our initial “How to” introductory and intermediate workshops we trialled in Hawaii during the main RTSRE conference were great, but were too short to cover enough material, so we are going to include running an entire single-day practical workshop on the topic. Various robotic telescope institutions and education projects will provide a variety of tutorials and workshops on getting started in the field.

A full day active workshops, tutorials and talks on using Robotic Telescopes for Student Research and Education. Come along and actually request your own images, make your own lightcurves, figure out how you are going to use all this stuff (or show others how to!) in your classroom. This event is open for middle to high school teachers (Years 4-13) and those that run programs involving such teachers and/or their students.

Let’s have some Fun!

An extensive social program will exist around the conferences.

    VENUE LOCATION

The RTSRE conference will be hosted at the University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, just north of the Central Business District (CBD). The primary venue at the University will be in the David Caro Building (192)

We welcome you to the creative, cultural capital of Australia, Melbourne. A multicultural metropolis, where roughly 30% of people speak another language other than English at home, Melbourne is the major city in the state of Victoria, named the “Education State” for it’s 10 universities, 2 of which are in the world top-100. Melbourne itself hides it’s true nature within 230 laneways concealing world-renowned restaurants, bars and street-art and is surrounded by numerous diverse inner-city neighbourhoods and the numerous botanical parks and gardens of Australia’s “Garden City”. You can also probably still hear us grumble about how Vienna knocked Melbourne off No. 1 of the world’s most liveable cities list in 2018 for the first time in eight years… but hopefully by the time you get here in 2019, Melbourne will have won the mantle back.
